Creating a Jesse Tree: A Meaningful Advent Activity for Families

With Advent beginning in only a few days, we wanted to offer a great activity for families that combines the spirit of gratitude and community we share at Thanksgiving with the prayerful anticipation of Jesus' Birth at Christmas.

The Jesse Tree is a beautiful Advent tradition that helps families prepare their hearts for Christmas while reflecting on God’s faithfulness throughout salvation history. Each ornament represents a Bible story leading to the birth of Jesus, connecting the Old Testament to the New. Creating a Jesse Tree is simple and a meaningful way to bring Scripture to life during this holy season.

  1. Choose a Tree Base
Start with a small tabletop tree, a few sturdy branches in a vase, or even a wall-hanging cutout of a tree. The base will serve as the "tree" where ornaments are displayed throughout Advent.

  2. Gather or Make Ornaments
Each ornament symbolizes a key story from the Bible. For example, a globe can represent creation, an ark for Noah, or a crown for King David. You can find printable ornaments online, purchase ready-made sets, or involve your kids in crafting them using paper, felt, or clay.

  3. Create a Scripture Reading Plan
Choose daily Bible readings to accompany each ornament. Many resources offer Jesse Tree guides that include the readings and corresponding symbols. Start with Genesis and follow the lineage of Jesus through the Gospels.

  4. Incorporate Daily Reflection
Each day, read the Scripture passage as a family and discuss its significance. Let a child place the corresponding ornament on the tree, fostering active participation and reflection.

  5. Make It Personal
Add your own family touches to the tree, such as including photos or symbols that represent your faith journey. This can deepen the connection between the stories of Scripture and your personal experiences.

By integrating the Jesse Tree into your Advent season, you’ll not only prepare for Christmas but also create cherished family traditions rooted in faith and gratitude.
