Choosing Family Over Division: Putting Politics Aside this Thanksgiving

As the election season intensifies, it’s easy to feel consumed by politics, current events, and social media debates. These issues can quickly become sources of tension, not only in the public sphere but within our own families. When disagreements arise around the dinner table, relationships can feel strained, leaving many of us feeling more distant from those we love most. This year, as Thanksgiving approaches, we have a unique opportunity to focus on what matters most and to celebrate the things that unite us, not divide us.

Here are a few ways you can put politics away this Thanksgiving and bring more joy, laughter, and togetherness to your holiday:

1. Focus on our Blessings Thanksgiving is a holiday built on gratitude, a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives. As we gather with family and friends, let’s take a step back from the distractions of political debate and think about what truly matters. The warmth of family, the joy of good food, and the memories we share are gifts worth cherishing. Focusing on these blessings allows us to build stronger bonds and reminds us that, beyond any differences, we have much to be grateful for together.

2. Bring a Sense of Humor and Lightheartedness When conversations feel heavy or tense, laughter can be a powerful remedy. A sense of humor helps us keep things in perspective, gently reminds us not to take things too seriously, and gives everyone room to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Remember, Thanksgiving is about celebration! Sharing funny stories, acknowledging the imperfections on both sides of the political spectrum, playing games, and staying lighthearted can create a joyful, relaxed atmosphere that lets people be themselves without fear of conflict.

3. Take a Break from Social Media Social media is a powerful tool, but it can also become a source of negativity and stress, especially during election season. We’ve all seen how it amplifies opinions, often creating an echo chamber that can heighten feelings of division. Consider taking a social media break this Thanksgiving. Turning off devices and focusing on the real people in front of us can bring a sense of peace and help us connect more meaningfully with our loved ones. Free from the online noise, we’re more present and able to fully enjoy the moment.

As we enter this season of gratitude and generosity, let’s make a conscious choice to focus on the best aspects of family and togetherness. Thanksgiving offers us the chance to appreciate each other, share laughter, and create new memories. In these moments, we find connection, understanding, and the joy that comes from simply being together. Putting aside differences to celebrate the blessings we share can bring a much-needed sense of unity and happiness to our families.

Count Your Blessings with a Gratitude Jar

If you want your family to embrace a spirit of thankfulness this November, the gratitude jar is perfect for you! This is a simple, low-stress, and cost effective way to get into the Thanksgiving festivities a little bit early..

How it works:
In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, set out a jar and some slips of paper. Each day, everyone writes down something they're thankful for—big or small—and places it in the jar. On Thanksgiving Day, gather together, read through the notes, and reflect on all the blessings you’ve collected. It’s a lovely way to visually see and share what each person is grateful for, sparking great conversations and fostering a spirit of thankfulness to God for the gifts he has given us!

Like this idea? Share it with a friend or post it on your social media page!
