Books and Technology: The Right Balance

Kensington, Maryland
The Kuzma Residence
Address will be sent to attendees

The Art of Living in Maryland will explore the importance of Books and Technology in our children’s lives and how we as parents can promote a healthy and educational balance of both.

Class #1: Reading Matters at all Ages; A List of Recommended Books
The importance of good reading cannot be overestimated. As Mark Twain tellingly remarked, “A man who doesn’t read good books has no advantage over a man who can’t read”. Good books entertain, they inspire, and they educate. During this session the presenter explores the myriad benefits of selective reading for children and adults, particularly very young children. Cultural literacy, language development, reading readiness and vocabulary are all enhanced by reading. Attendees are given the booklet “A Mother’s List of Books” written by our presenter Theresa Fagan. Weaving in examples throughout her talk, Theresa will show us how we can help ‘create’ readers at all ages. The role of imagination, criteria for assessing books, and parental example are also emphasized. Allowing time for questions and comments will follow the presentation.

Class #2: Managing the Technology in our Homes
Our second class will focus on technology and its effects on our family and our home life. From smart phone and smart homes, from lap tops to Alexa, we find our children and our families are continually being influenced every day. But what is this influence? Technology is changing the way we relate to each other, changing the way we do things, and changing the way we raise our families. Our expert speaker will explain that technology can have both a positive and a negative influence on our families. Our speaker will review these influences and demonstrate that we must take an active role on controlling the relationship we have with our technology. Our oversight and purposeful choices now in the role of technology in our family life will make an impact on how our children use technology when they are ready to make their own choices. Questions will be addressed after the presentation.

Lunch will be provided.
