A Year of Purpose: Setting Goals that Make a Difference for Others

The start of a new year brings a sense of renewal and hope, making it an ideal time to set resolutions that not only help us grow but also enable us to better serve those around us. Instead of focusing solely on self-improvement, let’s approach resolutions with the motivation to enrich the lives of others and strengthen our connections with family, friends, and our communities.

Resolutions are an opportunity to pause, reflect, and set intentions that align with our values and faith. They challenge us to become better versions of ourselves, not just for our own benefit but to contribute more meaningfully to the lives of those we love and serve.

When crafting resolutions, consider the season of life you’re in and how your goals can reflect your priorities in relationships and faith. Aim for one or two achievable and service-oriented resolutions that inspire growth and generosity.

Here are some ideas for resolutions focused on serving others:

  • Spend intentional one-on-one time with each of your children or loved ones.

  • Commit to some form of daily exercise so that you are stronger and more capable in your other tasks.

  • Volunteer regularly for a cause you care about.

  • Learn a new skill that will equip you to care for your home or family with more confidence.

  • Commit to performing a daily act of kindness, no matter how small.

  • Begin each day with prayer, offering your work and actions to God.

  • Write a thoughtful letter or message to someone each month, showing your gratitude or support.

These resolutions encourage us to grow in strength and joy so that we can serve others more fully. Whether it's nurturing relationships, practicing kindness, or deepening our faith, these goals remind us that our lives gain greater meaning when focused on others.

As you step into the new year, remember that resolutions are not about perfection but about becoming more intentional and outward-focused. By choosing resolutions centered on service, you’ll create a ripple effect of goodness that enriches your life and the lives of those around you.

"Don't wait until you are old to become a saint. Begin right now. Cheerfully and joyfully, by fulfilling the duties of your work and of your everyday life."
— St. Josemaria Escriva

Reasonable Resolution Checklist
When there are so many things we want to learn or habits we want to change, it can be tricky to set a resolution and stick to it.  Use the checklist below to set great goals and achievable resolutions in 2025!

Keep It Simple and Doable: Break down your goals into manageable steps. Simplicity increases the likelihood of sticking with your resolutions.

  1. Be Specific: One of the reasons resolutions fail is that they are often too grand or vague. Instead of resolving to "be healthier," for example, aim for something specific like "take a 20-minute walk three times a week" or "only have dessert once a week."

  2. Enlist Accountability: Share your goals with a friend or family member who can encourage you and help keep you on track.

  3. Celebrate Progress: Focus on progress, not perfection. Every small step forward is worth celebrating.

  4. Be Flexible: Life happens, and your resolutions might need to adapt. That’s okay—stay committed to the bigger picture.
